AAA game studio Ubisoft has partnered with blockchain gaming company Immutable to develop Web3 games through its Strategic Innovation Lab.
The announcement shared with Cointelegraph states that the two studios will combine their respective expertise to combine mainstream game development quality with Web3-enabled features.
Nicolas Pouard, head of blockchain initiatives at Ubisoft, pointed out that Immutable’s existing blockchain infrastructure and its experience integrating decentralized functions into games are important driving forces for this cooperation:
“We’re excited to work with them and look forward to bringing this level of fluidity to a mature game, so players can just focus on having fun experiencing it.”
Immutable co-founder and CEO James Ferguson added that this cooperation marks an important milestone in the field of Web3 games.
“We are very excited to work with Ubisoft to explore the benefits of Web3 and player digital ownership. We plan to leverage our ecosystem to ensure the partnership is successful,” Ferguson said.
The partnership follows successful demos of Immutable’s flagship games, including Guild of Guardians, Metalcore, Shardbound and Infinite Victory. These different games offer different genres for gamers to explore, with defined Web3 aspects such as immutable ownership of in-game assets.

Immutable also recently launched a testnet for its zero-knowledge summary (ZK-rollups) gaming solution, Immutable zkEVM. ZK-rollups have been attracting attention in 2023 as an important Ethereum layer 2 scaling technology that enables high-throughput, low-cost transactions for decentralized applications, services and solutions.
To date, the company has launched two different ZK-based scaling solutions, including Immutable zkEVM, which runs on Ethereum layer 2 Polygon, and Immutable X, a standalone rollup solution developed by ZK pioneer StarkWare.
Immutable’s gaming platform provides game studios with the infrastructure to build games that run on the Ethereum blockchain.
As 2024 approaches, Web3 games are starting to break into mainstream gaming. Cointelegraph exclusively reported that Illuvium Labs will list its flagship game “Illuvium” on November 28 on the mainstream game publisher Epic Games Store, which is home to popular games such as “Fortnite”.
