Aditya-L1 is being launched to study the sun. It will be placed in a halo orbit around Lagrangian point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system. The point is about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The L1 point gives satellites the advantage to view the Sun without any eclipses. According to ISRO, there are five Lagrangian points denoted as L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5.

The spacecraft will carry seven payloads. The journey will last 125 days, and the satellite is expected to be in orbit in mid-January.

IRSO plans to study the Sun because it is the closest star to Earth. A comprehensive understanding of the Sun could help scientists understand other stars in the Milky Way and beyond.
