Amazon Car dealers will be allowed to sell cars through their websites next year, starting with South Korean automaker Hyundai explain Thursday.

Starting in 2024, Amazon will allow shoppers to buy a new car online and then pick it up or have it delivered by a local dealer. Consumers will be able to search for available vehicles in their area, make a selection, and then check out on Amazon using their preferred payment and financing methods. The company says the new feature will “create another way for dealers to increase awareness of their choices and provide convenience to customers.”
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the partnership with Hyundai will change “the convenience for customers to purchase vehicles online.” As part of the deal, Hyundai will also equip its cars with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant starting in 2025.
Online used car retailer stocks Karavana and Kames After the news broke, the stock prices fell by more than 7% and 6% respectively.
With this move, shoppers will be able to buy cars on Amazon, but the dealer will still be the ultimate seller. Traditional automakers like Hyundai Motor Co. have complicated relationships with dealers, who in many states are backed by laws that make it difficult or illegal to bypass franchised dealers and sell new cars directly to consumers.
Tesla As well as other EV start-ups, e.g. Rivian Workarounds have been instituted in many states to sell vehicles directly to consumers online. That includes initiating sales in states that don’t ban the practice, or taking legal action to fight such laws, as they did in Michigan.
Less stringent laws regarding used car sales make it easier for companies like Carvana to sell used cars and trucks directly to consumers online.
