Just months after Google unveiled its next major operating system update, Android 14 is now rolling out to compatible Pixel smartphones. The latest version of Android improves security and accessibility and adds on-device generative artificial intelligence tools, including the ability to create unique lock screen wallpapers. While many smartphone manufacturers have yet to announce which of their phones will receive the Android 14 update, owners of the latest Pixel models can download the update immediately.
At the Made by Google 2023 event on Wednesday, Google launched its Pixel 8 series of smartphones running Android 14 out of the box. At the same time, the company announced that eligible Pixel smartphones will also receive the Android 14 update. This means that if you’re running a Pixel 4a, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold you’ll be able to download the Android 14 update. Pixel tablets will also be compatible with Android 14.
Some of the most noteworthy improvements and changes in Android 14 are related to the camera app, including support for “Ultra HDR” images, improved zoom support in third-party apps, and better image capture in low-light scenes. At the same time, the camera app can also scan documents such as certificates or shopping receipts and then store them in digital form.
The lock screen on Android 14 has been updated to support increased customization, making Pixel phones on par with iOS and Samsung’s One UI in terms of customization. Now you have the option to customize the lock screen clock design and use shortcuts of your choice on the lock screen. Meanwhile, the operating system’s built-in generative artificial intelligence tools can create unique wallpapers for you, which can be set on the home screen, lock screen, or both.

According to details shared by Google, apps will also be able to access information collected by other apps that also have access to the API.
If you want to download the Android 14 update on your Pixel smartphone, you can open the Settings app and tap system > system update > Check for updates > Download and install. You only need to do this if you haven’t received a push notification informing you that your smartphone is ready for the Android 14 update. Once the update is downloaded, your phone will begin the installation – you’ll need to restart your phone when prompted to complete the update process.
