Apple will launch the next iOS update on October 24, according to French regulators that monitor wireless communications. It’s worth noting that the update will specifically address radiation level issues on French iPhone 12s. In September, French regulators flagged the iPhone 12 for allegedly violating European radiation exposure limits.

The update keeps the iPhone 12’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) within the limits allowed in Europe. According to ANFR, the update rolled out to select beta testers last week and will be rolled out more broadly to all iPhone 12 users starting on October 24.
ANFR also confirmed that iPhone 12 sales will continue to be banned in France until the update is released to the public. Back in September, the ANFR banned Apple from selling the iPhone 12 after tests showed the model’s SAR value was slightly higher than the legal limit. ANFR tested a total of 141 smartphones, including iPhone 12 purchased from French retail stores. Two of the iPhone models had SAR values that exceeded the permissible limits set by the European Union. The European Union has set specific safety thresholds for devices’ SAR values, which scientific studies have shown may be associated with an increased risk of cancer.
After initially denying it, Apple promised to release an iOS update to address concerns about radiation levels in French iPhone 12 models. An upcoming update will specifically fix this issue.
With the launch of the latest iPhone 15 series, Apple recently stopped selling iPhone 12, iPhone 14 Pro models and iPhone 13 Mini in India.
Earlier this month, the iPhone maker also started rolling out the iOS 16.7.1 update for older models, which fixed two security vulnerabilities.
