India’s Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Thursday that Apple has integrated the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) GPS system in its iPhone 15 models. NavIC, powered by ISRO satellites, will be used in iPhone 15 along with other GPS systems from Galeilio and Glosnas.
On September 12, Apple released the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, which will be available later this month.
“Apple has two big milestones with the release of its latest iPhone 15. One of them is undoubtedly a very satisfying announcement, which is that the day customers in New York, Tokyo or London get their iPhone 15, customers in India will also be able to get it on the same day. Got an iPhone,” said Chandrasekhar.
The Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (MoS) also said that the iPhone 15 for the first time incorporates the NavIC GPS system along with other GPS systems from Galeilio and Glosnas in its system design.
“Thus, for the first time ever, a global product like iPhone will feature technology designed, delivered and supported by the Indian NavIC constellation, which is built, engineered and launched by ISRO.
“This… signals the coming of age of technology in India,” he said.
When asked whether the government plans to introduce NavIC in other sectors such as automobiles, he replied in the affirmative.
“Yes! Naturally, it will be mandatory for all cars to use NavIC trackers. The next step will be that all cars will also use NavIC trackers. Just like all iPhones are equipped with NavIC, all cars will be powered by NavIC,” he said .
