Apple Watch Series 9 and second-generation Apple Watch Ultra are expected to be officially released on September 12 during the “Wonderlust” event. The new Watch Series 9 is believed to bring many improvements over the Apple Watch Series 8. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that the upcoming smartwatch will feature a new version of Apple’s optical heart rate sensor. The Apple Watch Series 9 is said to be available in 42mm and 45mm sizes, while the Apple Watch Ultra is available in 49mm.

In his latest weekly energized newsletterMark Gurman said that Apple’s Watch Series 9 and second-generation Apple Watch Ultra will be equipped with new optical heart rate sensors. This would be a significant upgrade from the third-generation heart rate sensor found on the Watch Series 8 and last year’s Watch Ultra. Additionally, the smartwatch will reportedly get various sensor and other internal component upgrades.

Gurman said the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra will look similar to their predecessors. According to reports, the former will debut in 42mm and 45mm sizes. The Apple Watch Ultra, on the other hand, may come in 49mm size, is expected to be made from more recycled materials, and come in a black color option.

According to reports, like the iPhone 15 series, the new wearable device will be equipped with a U2 ultra-wideband chip to improve the “Find My” function. Additionally, Gurman said the new models will feature the first new chips since the Series 6 in 2020.

As part of an environmental push, the materials for the Apple Watch Series 9 stainless steel models will reportedly be made using a new manufacturing process based on 3D printing. The second-generation Ultra will likely switch to this process next year. Additionally, the Cupertino-based company is reportedly ditching some leather straps and may refresh or discontinue stainless steel straps for its 2015 watches.

Apple will host a “Wonderlust” event on Tuesday, September 12th. The event will kick off at 10:30 PM IST at Apple Park, California, and will be streamed live on the company’s YouTube channel and Apple.com website. The iPhone 15 series and second-generation AirPods Pro models are also expected to debut, along with new Apple Watch Ultra (2nd generation) and Apple Watch Series 9 models.
