Automaker ‘at the limit’ of what it can offer

Detroit – Ford The company has reached “the limit” of financial concessions it can offer the United Auto Workers union as contract negotiations continue for about 57,000 U.S. workers, a top executive said Thursday.

Kumar Galhotra, the company’s president of legacy operations, said any additional costs would hurt the automaker’s ability to operate in the future and invest in emerging areas such as electric vehicles.

“We’ve reached the limit … we’ve worked tooth and nail to get to this point,” Galhotra said on a conference call with media and analysts on Thursday. “Going any further would hurt our ability to invest in the business like we need to invest.” ability.”

Galhotra declined to say how much the company’s current proposals to the union would cost the company.

His comments came a day after the union launched a surprise strike at the automaker’s lucrative SUV and pickup plant in Kentucky.

“We were surprised by the escalation last night,” Galhotra said. “The Kentucky Truck Plant is one of the most important manufacturing plants in the United States.”
