AVAX blockchain explorer to shut down as Etherscan fees draw controversy

Snowtrace.io, the popular blockchain explorer tool from Avalanche (AVAX), will shut down its website, which is powered by Etherscan’s browser-as-a-service (EaaS) toolkit, on November 30. The Snowtrace team clarified that only its browser powered by Etherscan will be shut down.

According to reports on October 30 announcement, Snowtrace users must save backup information, such as private name tags and contact verification details, by the above date. While the team didn’t specify the reason for shutting down the browser, some pointed to the service fee for Etherscan’s EaaS toolkit. Mikko Ohtama, co-founder of Tradingprotocol, claimed that an annual EaaS subscription could cost between $1 million and $2 million.Dayu wrote:

“EtherScan is a very good product, but smart contract verification needs to be decentralized. Regulators and other parties will not comply, how do you check this? The source code is hosted by a private company in Malaysia”

Phillip Liu Jr., head of strategy and operations at Ava Labs, also said commented The protocol is “moving in a better direction” and will “definitely not” cease operations. Etherscan’s EaaS service provides a block browser and application programming interface (API) solution for the blockchain for a fee. The block explorer may be terminated due to non-renewal of the EaaS service agreement, insufficient bandwidth or limited traffic. In this case, users are advised to save their own data, such as private name tags, transaction records, contract verification details, etc. previously closure.
