The Chinese search engine has been publicly testing Ernie Bot in China since its release in March. The chatbot is based on Ernie, Baidu’s foundational artificial intelligence model. One base model is artificial intelligence trained on large amounts of data. The latest version of the Baidu model is called Ernie 3.5.

Baidu quoted the “China Science Daily” as saying that Ernie 3.5 surpassed ChatGPT in several benchmark tests. ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 model.

Ernie 3.5 also beat OpenAI’s latest, more advanced model, GPT 4, in the Chinese test, Science Magazine reported.

The focus on Baidu’s progress underscores the fierce competition in the field of generative artificial intelligence with the rapid advancement of U.S. and Chinese tech giants.
