Chandrayaan-3’s Pragyan Rover Begins Walk on Moon, Confirms ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said on Thursday that Pragyan Rover has started a moonwalk on the lunar surface. ISRO on X (formerly Twitter): “Chandrayaan-3 mission. Chandrayaan-3 rover headed to MOX, ISTRAC, moon walk begins!”

Earlier today, ISRO also released images from the lander’s Imaging Camera, which took images of the Moon before touching down on the lunar surface.

“This is how the lander imaging camera captures images of the moon before landing,” ISRO posted on X.

After a 40-day journey into space, the Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram touched down on the unknown south pole of the moon on Wednesday night, making India the first country to touch down.

India has also become the fourth country to successfully land on the moon after the United States, Russia and China. The country also became the first country to soft-land on the moon’s south pole.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed the Vikram lander on the lunar surface, tilting to a horizontal position before touchdown.

The spacecraft was launched on July 14 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

A GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle was used to launch the spacecraft, which entered lunar orbit on August 5, after which it underwent a series of orbital maneuvers before finally aiming at the lunar surface.
