ChromeOS 117 Announced With Material You Design, Adaptive Charging and Several Improvements

Google has started rolling out ChromeOS 177 to eligible Chromebook devices. The new software includes content designed by Material You, and has made adjustments to quick settings, notifications, battery charging control, color auxiliary settings and other elements. The update adds new rectangular buttons for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other settings. It also allows users to find the specifications of their Chromebook through Launcher. The new software also adds adaptive charging capabilities to extend battery life. In ChromeOS 17, users can also search for GIFs in the emoji picker.

in a new Blog article On September 26, Google announced the launch of ChromeOS 117 for Chromebooks. It comes with Google’s Material You revamp and quick settings display controls for things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Nearby Sharing, Cast Screen, VPN, Screen Capture, and Do Not Disturb in a grid layout instead of the previous small circles. The latest update also brings a new notification panel in the lower right corner of the screen, allowing users to access new messages, emails, and other alerts from within the app.

Google also added Improve The calendar displays any upcoming meetings and allows users to join directly with a button. This update brings dynamic color themes to Chromebook devices based on wallpaper hues. With this feature, accent colors will adapt to light and dark modes. It can be accessed from the Wallpapers and Styles application by right-clicking on the desktop.

In the new software, users can quickly find Chromebook specifications such as CPU and RAM through search in Launcher. It also provides a microphone privacy indicator in the lower-right status area to notify users when an app is using the device’s microphone or camera.

The new ChromeOS also includes adaptive charging features for battery health.You can enable it by going to Settings > Devices > Power Once enabled, this feature will slow charging when the battery reaches 80% capacity. It will charge the battery to 100% at a slower rate. It also allows users to listen to audio from Android apps and the web simultaneously without pausing the other app.

Other major upgrades available in the ChromeOS 117 update include GIF support in the emoji picker, time-lapse recording in the camera app, improved Vietnamese Telex and VNI input method experiences, and more.

The ChromeOS 117 update is expected to automatically reach all eligible devices via over-the-air (OTA). However, Chromebook users can manually check if the update is available on their device by navigating to . Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates.
