A Milwaukee comic book store is looking to sell rare copies of Spider-Man’s debut.
According to the Journal Sentinel , Collector’s Edge has obtained a copy of Amazing Fantasy No. 15. Created by Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee and published in 1962, this comic book tells the story of how Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, gained amazing powers, and learned that with great power comes great responsibility.
The store’s owner, Steve Dobrzynski, first posted photos of the book on social media last Tuesday. He told the Journal Sentinel that a couple discovered the book among a deceased relative’s property and gave it to him for help selling it. He did not name the couple.
A near-perfect copy of Amazing Fantasy No. 15 sold at a Texas auction in 2021 for $3.6 million. Collectible edge copy is worn with small edges tears.
Dobzinski sent it to Certified Guaranty, a Florida-based comic and collectibles grading service. The service gave the book a rating of 3.0 on a scale of 0.5 to 10, where 0.5 means very poor condition and 10 means good condition. Dobzinski said the book could sell for as much as $35,000.
“If you put it at auction, it depends on who is bidding,” he said. “If no one bids, it will obviously sell for less.”
Dobzinski reached out to some regular customers to try to buy the book before making it public, but he has yet to get anyone to say yes or no.
“They’re thinking about it, but I can only wait so long before people think about it,” Dobzinski said. “If I were selling it to someone else, my due diligence would be to try to get the best price possible.”
