Developer CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a live-action adaptation. The project was developed in partnership with Anonymous Content, an independent media company known for producing Emmy Award-winning shows like “True Detective” and “Mr. Robot.” It’s unclear whether the film will be a feature film or a TV series, but the search for a screenwriter has begun, with plans to tell a new story set in a futuristic neon world where sex, body modification, and political gossip are the norm. Commonplace. The developer also stressed that the adaptation is in “early development,” so it will be some time before we receive any further updates.
CD Projekt Red has previously dabbled in this type of passive media, using this setting to depict underdog stories with the Netflix animated series Cyberpunk: Edge Runner, which received critical acclaim and set the stage for the film. Video games, once eclipsed, have been given new life. Cyberpunk 2077 had a rough time at launch, plagued by game-breaking bugs and crashes to the point that Sony pulled it from the PS4 digital store. Since then, the game has seen some improvements thanks to countless hotfixes and patches, as well as fresh content. Update 2.0 was released last month, overhauling the benefits system and limiting technical enhancements. This was followed by the Phantom Free expansion, which allowed players to embark on high-stakes espionage missions with a secret agent played by Idris Elba. Keanu Reeves is another contributor to Hollywood star power in the base game.
For the live-action adaptation, CD Projekt Red is working directly with Anonymous Content’s head of television Garret Kemble, director of development Ryan Schwartz and CCO David Levine. The last of them worked on Westworld, the aforementioned True Detective, and the early seasons of Game of Thrones. The studio as a whole has some impressive projects lined up, including two Oscar-winning films: The Revenant and Spotlight. CD Projekt Red is no stranger to live-action adaptations, as the Henry Cavill-led “The Witcher” series instantly soared in popularity and has now been renewed for a fourth season — however, Liam Hemsworth (“The Hunger Games” movies ) )take over.
CDPR released a slew of new news during its Investor Day conference on Thursday night, confirming that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. At the same time, its “Phantom Liberty” expansion pack has sold 3 million copies in only 10 days of release. Additionally, the company’s CEO Adam Kiciński revealed his plans to resign from the position as part of a management shakeup. Effective January 1, 2024, he will assume a more supervisory role as Chief Strategy Officer, with the CEO position vacant and jointly succeeded by Adam Badowski and Michał Nowakowski.
Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Free expansion are available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
