Daily Objects Surge Magnetic MagSafe Battery Pack Review: All About Convenience

Apple has introduced a first-party MagSafe battery pack for iPhone 12 series devices, and while it works well as a MagSafe charger, most user feedback online seems to indicate that it has little to no ability to charge even with a regular charger. size iPhone. While Apple recently discontinued the MagSafe battery pack accessory, many third-party manufacturers have tried to offer better alternatives, some successfully and others unsuccessfully.

Daily Objects Surge comes in a pouch to prevent scratches when not in use

When a local accessories brand like Daily Objects decided to give it a try, it caught my attention. The product is not manufactured in India but designed by the brand. The Surge MagSafe power bank is equipped with a 10,000mAh battery and offers wired and wireless charging capabilities. Let’s take a closer look to see if this MagSafe Wireless Battery Pack is up to the job.

Daily Objects Surge Magnetic MagSafe Wireless Battery Pack Design and Specifications

The Surge Magnetic MagSafe Wireless Battery Pack certainly looks the part and someone seems to have put a lot of thought into designing it. Its body is made of ABS plastic, but thanks to the matte finish it successfully prevented the appearance of fingerprints during this review, so it doesn’t feel cheap.

There’s an orange button on one side near the top and a USB Type-C port on the other. In between there’s a simple LED display that, in addition to showing charging status, also has a green indicator light to show whether the battery pack is fast-charging the device. The orange button is primarily used to wake up the display, which lights up through the back panel to show its charge (or discharge) status. When you’re not charging the unit, the display remains invisible, hidden beneath the back panel.

When attached to a MagSafe-compatible iPhone, the magnets provide a secure grip and won’t easily fall off

The Surge Power Bank also has a nifty stand on the back, which is made of metal and folds out enough to make the iPhone’s display clearly visible when placed vertically on the battery pack. iPhone can also be held horizontally to watch movies or use a new standby mode while charging (available in iOS 17).

The alignment of the MagSafe magnets is perfect. I tried this on two iPhones (an iPhone 14 Plus and an iPhone 14 Pro) and they lined up perfectly with the battery pack, gripping and clinging to them like a leech. Once installed, there’s a slim chance the charger will accidentally come off your phone, whether it’s in a backpack or in your pocket. I really like that it requires a lot of force to separate the charger from the iPhone after installation.

When stuck on an iPhone 14 Pro, it’s as wide as an iPhone but about an inch shorter in height. This is because the MagSafe magnet is positioned closer to the top edge of the charger, which keeps the phone floating above the bottom edge of the charger. When stuck on the iPhone 14 Plus, the phone easily covers all of its sides, with the top about 2 inches higher and no extra space at the bottom.

Mounting locations differ between regular iPhone models and Plus or Max size iPhone models

The charger weighs 209 grams, which is the same weight as the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Plus. While it does appear chunky when attached to the iPhone 14 Pro, it feels compact when attached to the 14 Plus given the larger overall size of the phone. I found the charger to be compact enough to slip easily into my regular jeans pocket, but obviously won’t fit any slim-fitting jeans.

DailyObjects Surge Magnetic MagSafe Wireless Battery Pack Performance

Since Daily Objects Surge is designed for iPhones (which have MagSafe capabilities), I primarily tested them on the iPhone 14 Pro, which has a 3,200mAh battery, and the iPhone 14 Plus, which has a larger 4,323mAh battery. According to Daily Objects, the wireless battery pack can charge the iPhone with a maximum wireless power of 15W or a wired power of 18W.

However, things don’t quite work as advertised, and that mostly has to do with the wireless charging certification bit. Since this is a “MagSafe Compatible” certified product, its charging power is only 7.5W, which is different from other “Made for MagSafe” certified products whose charging power is 15W. In short, whether you’re using a battery pack or a wall outlet as a regular charger, your Qi charging speeds will be limited. This also means that a regular wired Apple MagSafe charger can charge faster at 15W, but will also need to be plugged into a 20W charging adapter to operate.

The Daily Objects Surge is also capable of charging two devices at the same time, but since its total output is 20W, I recommend only charging one accessory as an add-on device, rather than charging another smartphone, as this will slow down the charging speed.

When wirelessly charging the iPhone 14 Pro, the Surge battery pack charged it to 26% in 30 minutes and completed the charge in 2 hours and 21 minutes. When finished, the battery pack only has 40% of its 10,000mAh capacity left, meaning there’s just enough for a full charge, but not a full charge again.

When charging the iPhone 14 Plus, the battery pack only reached 16% capacity in 30 minutes and completed the charge in 3 hours and 26 minutes, which is quite slow. After charging is completed, only 22% of the battery is left.

One can even mount an iPhone horizontally on it to watch movies or use iOS 17’s new standby mode

Wired charging works better on both iPhones. The Surge battery pack charges 61% in just 30 minutes and is fully charged in 1 hour and 53 minutes. Since there is less waste with wired charging, I can actually use the battery pack to fully charge it again. After the iPhone 14 Plus was plugged in, the battery pack was charged to 49% of the charge in 30 minutes and completed charging in 2 hours and 2 minutes, with 36% of the battery remaining. When I put the iPhone 14 Pro on its back, I managed to get an extra full day out of it.

judgment

The Daily Objects Surge Magnetic MagSafe Wireless Battery Pack is very convenient. This small portable charger is twice as powerful when plugged in, but is obviously better suited for smaller or standard-sized iPhones rather than Pro Max or Plus models.

Wireless charging speeds are decent, but the emphasis is on convenience. All you need to do is attach the Surge to your iPhone and it’ll always have 100% charge until it runs out of juice. If you hate lugging around a bunch of cables, especially if you have an older iPhone that uses a Lightning cable, this is a simple, painless way to keep your phone connected at your desk or wherever you are. Charge your phone at all times.
