Emmy Awards 2023 Delayed to January Due to Hollywood Actors and Writers Strikes

The 2023 Emmy Awards have officially been postponed until next year. After months of conversations between the Television Academy and new broadcaster Fox, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on January 16 at 6.30am BST/January 15 at 5pm PT in the US. It’s the first time the Emmys have been postponed in two decades — the first after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The latest delay comes amid an ongoing actor and writers strike in Hollywood that has halted several major film and TV productions. Nominees were announced back in July, with The Successor leading the way, and a host will be decided after the strike.

Without the cast/nominees, an awards show would seem rather hollow, and without a writer behind the scenes with a proper script or jokes, an awards show would be visionless.according to The Hollywood Reporter, there was a case where the show could have aired on TV without a writer, but the lack of star power led to an inevitable delay. You see, members of SAG-AFTRA (Hollywood Screen Actors Guild) are prohibited from starring in or promoting any film or TV projects in which they are involved, other than accepting awards for eliminated works, until the union reaches a fair agreement with the major studios. It’s also why several big-budget films with stellar casts have been delayed.

The 2023 Emmys, originally scheduled for September, have been delayed by nearly four months, during which studios hope the strike will subside. However, the new date also places it in an already busy awards season. As usual, the telecast will also include the Creative Emmys, which honor technical excellence in television and a handful of other smaller shows – the event is scheduled for two nights on January 6 and January 7. The next night, though, coincides with the 2024 Golden Globes event, which celebrates film and television, essentially undercutting the already underrated achievements of the creative sector. I’d say all eyes will be on the bigger awards show.

Not to mention, the 2024 Critics’ Choice Awards will be held on January 14th (January 15th in India), which happens to be the day before the newly confirmed date for the Primetime Emmys. So these are consecutive awards shows, with the former featuring both the TV and film categories. Currently, it has not been confirmed that other awards broadcasters are moving the dates. As previously mentioned, the Emmy nominees have already been determined, and the final voting schedule for Academy members remains unchanged – August 17-28. Even SAG-AFTRA and the DGA (Directors Guild of America) have scheduled their awards ceremony for February, the eve of Oscars season.

It’s unclear whether the Writers and Screen Actors Union will be able to reach a fair deal by January because deadline The July report revealed a statement from an unnamed executive. “The end result is to keep things dragging on until union members start losing their apartments and houses,” they said. Another called it a “brutal but necessary evil.”

The 75th Annual Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30AM CST / January 15 at 5PM PT. In India, the film will be available on Lionsgate Play.
