Arc Boat Company starts selling its second electric boat in three years this week. Designed for wake enthusiasts, the new $258,000 Arc Sport follows the company’s earlier limited-edition luxury cruiser, the Arc One.
While the startup has produced fewer than two dozen early boats, it is gearing up to continue production of the new model unveiled Tuesday.
The 23-foot-long Arc Sport can carry up to 15 people at a time. It has a large battery with enough power to last 4 to 6 hours and can reach a top speed of 40 mph. For its price, it will compete with high-end models sold by traditional boat manufacturers such as Nautique, MasterCraft and Malibu.
Arc is one of a handful of promising startups working to electrify sport and recreational boating, including General Motors-backed Pure Watercraft and Stockholm-based X Shore.
Conventional fuel-burning ships cause serious environmental problems, including noise pollution, smoke and water pollution floating on the surrounding water.
Arc co-founder and CEO Mitch Lee said he spent his youth wakeboarding, kneeboarding and wakeboarding in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta near Stockton, Calif., and Always noticed the stench of burning diesel and engine exhaust at the dock. .
He wanted to do something to reduce the negative effects of these movements and worked with Ryan Cook, a former SpaceX engineer and the company’s chief technology officer, to achieve that goal and “a better boating experience.”
Arc’s leadership team also includes veterans from boating, automotive and transportation companies, including Tesla, Rivian, LyftBraunschweig and Ocean Maxwhich helped the electric boat maker convince investors that its design and technology worked.
Arc’s roughly $110 million in early funding comes from celebrity angel investors and venture capital firms, including the NBA’s Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, actor Will Smith, and venture capital funds Andreessen Horowitz, Eclipse Ventures and Menlo Ventures wait.
Lee said Arc was able to design and begin building its all-electric boats in a relatively short period of time (less than three years) because the auto industry has invested years and billions of dollars in building a supply chain for electric vehicle parts . .
The CEO stressed that buying parts from trusted suppliers rather than building many from scratch, as electric vehicle makers Tesla and Rivian did in their early days, allows them to go from concept to dock in a few years rather than a decade. . .
Arc plans to start delivering its new battery-electric Arc Sport to customers this year.
