Ford’s second-quarter U.S. sales jump on big gains for F-Series trucks

Detroit – FordSales in the second quarter were up 9.9% year-over-year, driven by strong growth in F-Series truck sales.

The Detroit automaker reported on Thursday that it sold 531,662 vehicles from April to June, up from 483,688 cars and trucks sold in the same period a year earlier that were hampered by supply chain issues.

Sales of Ford’s F-Series trucks rose 34% in the second quarter from a year earlier, with sales of the all-electric F-150 more than doubling to 4,466.

Ford’s overall truck sales, the main driver of the company’s profits, are up 23% in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2022. Growth was driven by increased production of the new Super Duty truck and other models, the company said.

“With the F-Series, vans, the new Escape and the F-150 Lightning, Ford is the best-selling brand and truck for the sixth month in a row this year,” said Andrew Frick, Ford vice president of sales, distribution and trucks. “Our sales of electric vehicles continue to grow. Our factory was restructured earlier this year, and the improvement in Mustang Mach-E inventory flow that started to emerge late in the second quarter helped Mustang Mach-E sales climb 110% in June. “

However, Ford’s EV sales fell 2.8% to 14,843 vehicles during the quarter, as Mach-E supplies fell short due to overhauls at factories that make them. Ford revamped the plant to ramp up Mach-E production this quarter as part of a larger plan to dramatically ramp up production of electric vehicles and make its electric vehicle business profitable by the end of 2026.

For now, Ford’s EV sales remain small: EVs accounted for just 2.8% of the automaker’s total sales in the second quarter, while conventional internal combustion engines accounted for about 91% of sales. Hybrids accounted for 6.5 percent of sales.
