A Georgia man was shocked after receiving a speeding ticket worth $1.4 million, but city officials said the number was a placeholder and not the actual fine amount.
Narrated by Connor Catto WSAVTV In September, he received a summons after being pulled over in Savannah for driving 90 mph (145 km/h) in a 55 mph (89 km/h) zone.
He called the court, believing the number was a typo, but said he was told he either had to pay or appear in court in December.
Savannah officials said anyone caught driving 35 mph (56 kph) over the speed limit must appear in court where a judge will determine the actual fine.
They said the numbers Cato received reflected automatically generated placeholders. In addition to state-mandated fees, the actual fine may not exceed $1,000.
Officials told WSAV the court is working to adjust the language in the electronic subpoenas to avoid future confusion.
