Detroit – General Motors Plans to lay off about 1,300 workers in Michigan starting early next year as production of vehicles they produce is discontinued, company disclosure in state documents.
The biggest layoffs are expected. That includes 945 workers at Orion Assembly, which builds the Chevrolet Bolt model, which will end production after this year.
Final production date is scheduled for the week of December 18th; however, layoffs won’t occur until January 1st.
General Motors will retool Orion to build electric trucks. The plant is expected to resume operations by the end of 2025.
Another 369 laid off workers are from GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping plant, which will no longer build the Chevrolet Camaro. GM previously announced it would cease production of the vehicle but did not disclose how many employees would be laid off at the plant, which continues to produce Cadillac sedans.
“The Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant notified employees today that it will adjust staffing levels due to the end of Camaro production,” GM said in a statement. “As a result, beginning January 2, approximately 350 employees will are impacted. GM expects that all affected team members will receive job offers in accordance with the provisions of the UAW-GM National Agreement.”
The layoffs at Grand River will begin Jan. 2 and continue through March, according to WARN notification documents.
