Detroit – United Auto Workers and General Motors According to the voting results, it has been approved by the majority of workers Published on Thursday Union morning.
Like the negotiations themselves, the vote didn’t go as smoothly as many imagined, especially at GM. Most of the Detroit automaker’s large assembly plants rejected the deal, but that wasn’t enough to offset support for smaller plants and a handful of others.
The deal’s approval was thrown into doubt Wednesday morning when seven of GM’s 11 U.S. assembly plants rejected the deal. But changes in votes in favor of the deal, specifically at an SUV plant in Texas, gave the deal a much-needed lifeline.
The deal was supported by about 54% of GM’s more than 34,700 autoworkers who voted, according to the UAW’s vote tracker. The results at the two smaller GM plants, which represent about 1,400 workers, were still strong but could not offset a margin of about 2,500 votes.
Both the UAW and GM declined to comment on the results until they are finalized.
