Google Bard Gets New Features to Catch Up With Rival ChatGPT’s Popularity

Alphabet’s Google said on Tuesday that its generative artificial intelligence Bard will be able to fact-check its answers and analyze users’ personal Google data as the tech giant strives to catch up with the popularity of ChatGPT.

Last year, Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched the ChatGPT chatbot, sparking a race in the tech industry to bring generative AI technology to consumers. At the time, ChatGPT was the fastest growing consumer application ever and is now one of the top 30 websites in the world.

Bud didn’t take off the same way. In August, it had 183 million visits, accounting for 13% of ChatGPT’s visits, according to website analytics firm Sametimeweb.

To gain a foothold in the fast-growing field of artificial intelligence, Google is rolling out the Bard extension to enable users to import data from other Google products. For example, users can ask Bard to search their files in Google Drive or provide a summary of the user’s Gmail inbox. Jack Krawczyk, senior product director at Google, said that currently, Bard users can only get information from Google apps, but Google is working with outside companies to connect their apps to Bard in the future.

Another new feature in Bard aims to alleviate a thorny problem in generating artificial intelligence: inaccurate responses known as “hallucinations.” Bard users will be able to see which parts of Bard answers differ from or match Google search results.

“We present (Bard) in a way that you admit when you’re not confident,” Krawczyk said. The goal, he explains, is to build trust in generative AI by holding Bard accountable. .

The third new feature allows users to invite others to join Bard conversations.
