Google Might Use Samsung’s FO-WLP to Make Tensor G3 Run Cooler Than the Tensor G2

The Google Pixel 8 series (including the regular Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro) will be officially launched on October 4 at the “Made by Google” event. Google is expected to equip the Pixel 8 series with the next-generation Tensor G3 SoC as an upgrade from the Tensor G2 SoC in the Pixel 7 series. The company hasn’t delved into the details of its internal chip, but new leaks suggest it will offer better thermal management. Tensor G3 may adopt Samsung foundry’s FO-WLP (fan-out wafer-level packaging) method. This is expected to reduce heat generation and improve power efficiency of the Pixel 8 series.

Tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) on X (formerly Twitter) suggestion The Tensor G3, which is expected to power the upcoming Pixel 8 series phones, will be one of the first smartphone chips manufactured by Samsung to adopt the FO-WLP packaging method. This approach is expected to reduce heat generation and improve power efficiency of the Tensor G3 SoC. If true, this would solve the overheating issue with current Pixel phones.

The FO-WLP process is already used by Qualcomm and MediaTek, and it could be a game-changer for Google’s Pixel series of smartphones. The Tensor G3 system-on-a-chip is expected to be more efficient than first- and second-generation platforms. According to reports, Tensor G3 will include 9 CPU cores and adopt a 1+4+4 layout. Last year’s Tensor G2 adopted a 4+2+2 core layout.

According to reports, the new CPU will feature one Cortex-X3 core running at 3.00GHz, four Cortex-A715 cores running at 2.45GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores running at 2.15GHz. It may include an ARM Mali-G715 GPU with 10 cores clocked at 890MHz. Additionally, the Tensor G3 SoC is said to feature AV1 encoding. This will enable Samsung Multifunction Codec (MFC) to support 8K30 video decoding and encoding in H.264 and HEVC.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launch event will be held at the Made by Google event in New York on October 4 at 10:00 am local time (7:30 pm IST). In addition to smartphones, the event will also debut the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Buds Pro. The phones are confirmed to be available for pre-order in India via Flipkart starting October 5.

Both Pixel 8 series smartphones are expected to run Android 14 and feature 120Hz refresh rate displays. The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to have a 4,950mAh battery and support 27W wired fast charging. Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 may be equipped with a 4,485mAh battery that supports 24W wired charging and 12W wireless charging.

At Google I/O 2023, the search giant repeatedly told us it cares about artificial intelligence, launching its first foldable phone and Pixel-branded tablet. This year, the company will use artificial intelligence technology to enhance its apps, services and Android operating system.
