Google is offering dark web reporting to Google One subscribers in India. Because the dark web is designed to hide users’ identities and whereabouts, it has become a hub for hackers and outlaws to conduct illicit businesses, such as buying and selling sensitive personal data of people around the world. Users will be able to track their personal information in the darkest corners of the internet. Earlier this year, Google One rolled out its service to all users in the United States. Previously, the service was only available to Premium 2TB plan subscribers.
Personal information such as a person’s name, date of birth, phone number, email address and other details can be used to commit crimes such as identity theft or financial fraud. The Google Dark Web report will inform users if and when their personal information is found on the dark web, enabling them to take necessary action and be more careful in protecting themselves against such scams.
When the dark web reporting option is enabled, users enter and select the information they wish to track in a monitoring profile. If any relevant data is found on the dark web, the tool notifies users whose data has been compromised and provides instructions on how to protect that information. Regular Google users might run a one-time dark web check for an email address, but they won’t receive ongoing tracking or new search alerts.
Members of Google One can use the Dark Web Report to see if their name, date of birth, up to 10 email addresses, and 10 phone numbers are on the dark web. They can also enable real-time dark web tracking to get updates on new results and suggested actions and support.
The Dark Web report will highlight other relevant details that may have been uncovered in hacking attempts and data dumps, as well as observations that match private data in user monitoring profiles. Data stored in user monitoring profiles is managed in compliance with Google’s privacy standards, and tracking can be deleted or deactivated by the user at any time.
