Launched last week, the Google Pixel 8 Pro is the latest flagship smartphone from the search giant alongside the standard model. The phone has a metal frame with glass on both sides. Days ahead of the smartphone’s launch in India and global markets, YouTubers have been testing the smartphone’s durability through ‘drop’ and ‘scratch’ tests. While these tests don’t definitively indicate the phones’ ability to be damaged in the real world, the Pixel 8 Pro appears to beat the iPhone 15 Pro Max in terms of durability.
In a recent YouTube video posted by PBKReviews, a person holding Google’s new flagship phone at waist height drops the Pixel 8 Pro first. The phone’s screen is pointed at the ground, but aside from some signs of wear on the edges of the phone, the concrete doesn’t appear to have caused any damage to the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2-protected display. The corners of the metal frame show some scratches when the phone is dropped from the same height as a person’s head, but the glass on the front and rear panels remains intact.
Scratches appear on the Pixel 8 Pro’s back panel and horizontal metal camera module when the back panel is dropped from waist height onto concrete. The next test is to drop the phone from your waist, but lay it on its side. The impact to the frame did affect the smartphone – the display in the upper left corner sustained some damage, but it still works fine.
In the film, the Pixel 8 Pro is also put through a scratch test, which involves placing the phone in a Ziploc bag filled with sand and then moving the smartphone’s display over the sand’s surface. The Pixel 8 Pro found very small scratches on its display, but it didn’t appear to be affected by the scratch test.
The YouTuber mentioned that the Pixel 8 Pro survived the channel’s drop test, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra cracked in the drop test. Likewise, the Google Pixel 8 Pro phone is said to perform better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max in these tests.
While the Pixel 8 Pro hasn’t yet passed Zack Nelson’s (JerryRigEverything) bend test on YouTube, these early signs of durability are a good sign. The Pixel 8 Pro is not only expensive but also costs over Rs. There are 100,000 users in India, but Google has also promised seven years of operating system, feature and security updates for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The strong build quality of these phones can largely ensure their longevity.
