Gmail, Google’s popular email client, is always getting updates and new features to make the app more user-friendly. Now, Gmail may soon be rolling out a new emoji reactions feature on iOS and Android, allowing users to react to emails using emojis. This feature is similar to what’s already available on Microsoft Outlook. According to a new report, the feature will add an emoji button next to the three-dot menu of options on the right side of emails. The icon will allow users to choose from a list of available emojis to quickly respond to emails.

According to reports, the new emoji reaction button in Gmail will display a hint of Google’s feature when clicked for the first time. “Reply quickly and add personality – Gmail users can see your reaction in the original message. Others will receive the reply email,” the tip reads. What this tells us is that users who don’t use the native Gmail app on their phones will receive emoji reactions to their emails as separate email replies, rather than as reactions to the same email.
After clicking on the emoji reaction icon, users will get a preset list of five emojis to choose from and quickly react to emails. There’s also a “+” button in the list, which allows users to access an entire library of emoticons to choose how they react to emails. According to the report, users can choose from three possible ways to send emoji reactions to emails. This includes an emoji icon next to the three-dot menu, a “Add reaction” option within the three-dot menu itself, and another emoji button at the bottom of the email next to the “Reply,” “Reply All,” and “Forward” buttons.
Users can also react to emails by clicking on emojis that people have already used to react to the same previous email, the report said. While Gmail users on iOS and Android will have emoji reactions natively supported within the app and the reactions will appear in the parent email, users using other email clients will reportedly receive each emoji reaction as Separate response to initial email. It’s unclear whether this feature will be rolled out with the mobile version of Gmail.
As early as June, Google began rolling out the artificial intelligence-driven “Help Me Write” feature to Workspace Labs testers of Gmail for Android and iOS. This feature helps draft emails based on user-provided prompts. The search engine giant announced the “Help Me Write” feature at its annual Google I/O 2023 event in May, along with a slew of new artificial intelligence tools.
