‘Gran Turismo’ races ahead of ‘Barbie’ in U.S. box office with .4 million

The box office results are in, with Sony’s racing movie Gran Turismo finally beating out “Barbie” for the weekend box office.

on Sunday, ” Gran Turismo appears to be neck and neck with Warner Bros. “Barbieis now in its sixth weekend, with both grossing just over $17 million. But actual box-office results released by the studios on Monday showed a clear winner: “Gran Turismo” ended up taking $17.4 million in North American theaters, while “Barbie” took in $15.1 million.

As is the case with new films in wide release, “Gran Turismo”‘s total also includes Thursday night previews ($1.4 million). More unusually, however, Sony also took in $3.9 million from other preview screenings (or “sneak peeks”) held before Thursday — a less common but still standard practice.

“Gran Turismo” was due to open widely on Aug. 11, but the cast couldn’t help promote the film because actor strike Sony made the switch over time, opting for a two-week period of limited preview screenings and fan events leading up to a nationwide launch this past weekend.

It’s been an unusual weekend in theaters.american movie theater The Second National Film Day Tickets for all movies and screenings at nearly every theater nationwide are $4 on Sunday. That might be a little too optimistic when Sunday’s $7.75 million estimate for “Barbie” actually grossed $5.7 million.

Technically, “Barbie” could see increased ticket sales this weekend, but the studio won’t report individual admissions in North America. However, the daily statistics show that “Barbie” has the upper hand on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, “Barbie” beat “Gran Turismo” to $4.1 million, earning $5.4 million. “Barbie” also took in more on Sunday ($5.7 million compared with $4.7 million for “Gran Turismo”).

The main difference came on Friday, when “Gran Turismo” reportedly took in $8.6 million (again including preview and preview grosses), while “Barbie” made $4 million on Friday (excluding Thursday. evening income).

It’s a reminder that Sunday box office estimates are just estimates, and that competing films in weekend “races” don’t always play by the same rules.
