Honor 90 5G First Impressions: A New Beginning

HonorTech or HTech has launched a new smartphone in India called Honor 90 5G, reviving the brand in India after a long hiatus. This smartphone belongs to the sub-Rs 40,000 category. Some of the latest models from Realme, Motorola and OnePlus have also intensified competition in this segment. We received this Honor 90 5G in emerald green, and this was my first impression of the phone.

The Honor 90 5G doesn’t focus on any one particular area, but tries to accommodate all popular specs. 6.7-inch AMOLED curved floating display, premium design, 200-megapixel rear main camera and 50-megapixel front camera are just some of the highlights of this smartphone.

The back of the phone is made of glass and comes with a polycarbonate frame. All rear sensors are housed in two separate camera bumps that look like rings. There is a shiny trim around the bump. The rest of the panel has a dotted pattern that sparkles in the light and also provides a good grip. These dot-like patterns protect the phone from fingerprints to a great extent.

The frame of Honor 90 5G is mirrored. The power button and volume rocker are on the right side of the phone. The bottom has a SIM card tray, USB Type-C port, and a speaker grille. One microphone port is at the top and the other is at the bottom. The Honor 90 5G features a curved display with narrow bezels around the panel. The bottom bezel is a bit thicker than the rest.

There is a notch in the top center of the display that houses the selfie camera. The phone is only 7.8 mm thick and weighs 183 grams. The design of Honor 90 5G is quite attractive and is easily recognized even in a crowd.

The display refresh rate of Honor 90 5G is 120Hz. This is an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2664×1200 pixels. The phone’s HDR peak brightness is rated at 1,600 nits. It is HDR10+ certified and Netflix’s HDR certified. Honor Technology said that its smartphones have adopted 3,840Hz PWM display dimming technology. The display is impressive, with content looking crisp and vivid. The colors appear intense whether indoors or outdoors.

Honor 90 5G uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor. There are a few select smartphones in the Indian market equipped with this processor, one of which is the Motorola Razr 40. This SoC is built on a 4nm process and is considered good. This processor supports 14 5G frequency bands. Despite my short time with it, I found this processor to be very capable.

My review unit came with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB storage. In this configuration, the phone handles social media browsing, content streaming, and short-term gaming well. We’ll be putting this smartphone through its paces, so stay tuned for the full review. In order to prevent the phone from overheating during heavy use, Honor Technology said it uses graphite sheets and an artificial intelligence-based thermal management system in the Honor 90 5G.

The main rear camera of Honor 90 5G is 200 megapixels. Apart from this, there is a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and macro camera, as well as a third depth camera. The rear main camera is equipped with a 1/1.4-inch sensor. The field of view (FOV) of the ultra-wide-angle camera is 112 degrees. The camera app has options for various modes such as HDR, Portrait, Multi Video, Individual Cut, Close-up. The rear main camera can record 4K 30fps videos, while the 50MP front lens can also record 4K 30fps videos.

The rear main camera can achieve up to 10x digital zoom. The initial photos I took looked good. The selfie camera looks more effective, but we’ll discuss camera performance in detail in the review.

The Honor 90 5G comes with a 5000mAh battery, but there is no charger in the box. There is only one USB Type-A to Type-C cable. When first used, the phone’s battery lasts about a day.

The Honor 90 5G smartphone runs Magic OS 7.1 based on Android 13. There are some pre-installed apps on your phone that can be uninstalled. Talking about other features, it comes with RAM Turbo through which the RAM of the phone can be expanded to almost 5GB. The phone also comes with NFC, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, and UFS 3.1 storage. The company promises two years of software and three years of security updates.

We will be conducting all the necessary tests on the Honor 90 5G smartphone in the coming days, so stay in touch for the full review.
