While the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) brings many benefits, it also poses significant risks if the technology falls into the wrong hands. However, decentralization using blockchain technology may help prevent disaster, said Janet Adams, chief operating officer of SingularityNET, an artificial intelligence and Web3 project.
At the Future of Blockchain Summit in Dubai, Cointelegraph sat down with Adams to learn about the centralization risks with AGI and how decentralization can be key to mitigating them.
Although general artificial intelligence is still a conceptual version of artificial intelligence that allows machines to learn and think like humans, its development will bring huge changes to the world. However, machines need to be conscious and self-aware to perform a wider range of tasks.
Adams said the “dystopian future” of general artificial intelligence that many imagine could happen if the technology were monopolized by big tech companies, the military or the government. The executive believes that big tech companies will use the technology “for the benefit of a few” and will not lead to significant changes in today’s inequalities.
Additionally, Adams stressed that if artificial intelligence is developed entirely by the military, the risk could be “human survival,” meaning humans could use the technology to wage war. On the other hand, if the technology is developed by a single government, executives believe it could result in them having unprecedented powers.
In order to prevent these risks, SingularityNET Chief Operating Officer believes that it is very important to use blockchain technology to decentralize the development of general artificial intelligence. Adams explained:
“Blockchain is the foundation of decentralization. It can be used to enable artificial intelligence-to-artificial intelligence on-chain financial transactions, and it can be used to ensure that we have broad access to the broadest group of developers around the world for open source artificial intelligence development. “
Adams pointed out that decentralization will allow AGI to serve the interests of everyone, rather than just being monopolized by a few organizations.

Despite these views, Adams also recognized that once general artificial intelligence is invented, it will be impossible to completely predict how it will behave because it will be smarter than humans. However, the executive wanted AGI to consider humans as their ancestors. She explained:
“Our view is to decentralize governance and ensure that all technologies we develop have a positive impact on the planet, people, and set an example of love, kindness and compassion in AGI. “
Adams also added that they hope that when general artificial intelligence is born, they will “see us as their ancestors.”
