The iPhone 15 series debuted at Apple’s “Wonderlust” event earlier this month, bringing a slew of new twists to the company’s traditional designs. Most notably, the new phone ditches the much-maligned Lightning port in favor of standardized USB Type-C. The iPhone 15 Pro models also do away with the series’ regular mute switch, opting instead for customizable action buttons, which really increases the likelihood that you can perform actions with the click of a button on the iPhone 15 Pro. Since the action button can be assigned to a range of apps and functions, including the Shortcuts app on iPhone, almost every app can now be tied to it. As some have discovered, you can now use ChatGPT as a voice assistant on the iPhone 15 Pro in place of Siri.
ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular generative AI chatbot, gained voice conversation support earlier this week, allowing it to engage in natural back-and-forth conversations with users. The feature, currently only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers, essentially turns the chatbot into an AI-powered voice assistant. Now, with Apple’s new action button, ChatGPT can easily replace Siri as the preferred voice assistant on iPhone 15 Pro. First as ZDNet spotthe ChatGPT app on iOS can bind to action buttons using the Shortcuts app.
Just download OpenAI’s ChatGPT app from the App Store—it’s free. Then, go to Settings>Action buttons On iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, then swipe to select the shortcut option. Then, you click on “Select Features” and select the ChatGPT app. This binds the ChatGPT app on your iPhone to an action button, allowing you to bring up the app from your home screen with just one click.
Since ChatGPT now supports voice, it can effectively replace Siri as the default voice assistant on the iPhone 15 Pro. However, as mentioned earlier, the voice feature is currently only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise subscribers. ChatGPT Plus subscription starts at $20 per month (approximately Rs. 1,660). iPhone users can already use the popular Google Assistant as an alternative to Siri through its dedicated iOS app. The app can also be tied to shortcuts so that when you say “Hey, Siri, Hey, Google,” Siri will redirect you to Google Assistant to query it.
Additionally, ChatGPT Plus users can now access the Internet after ChatGPT’s September 2021 deadline. OpenAI announced Thursday that ChatGPT users can start browsing the internet, essentially expanding the scope of data the chatbot can access beyond its early September 2021 deadline. Therefore, now with the action button, iPhone 15 Pro users can also access update information on the Internet through ChatGPT. The feature is also currently limited to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers, but OpenAI plans to expand it to all users soon.
