iPhone 15 Tipped to Offer Slower Transfer Speeds With the Bundled USB Type-C Cable

The iPhone 15 series is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s event next month, and the upcoming smartphone lineup is expected to bring a slew of upgrades, from new charging ports to an upgraded rear camera setup. According to a recent report, the iPhone 15 series will support Thunderbolt connectivity via the rumored USB Type-C port. However, now word is that the cable that comes with the iPhone 15 will only support USB 2.0 connections, which means it will support slower charging and transfer speeds than USB 4 or Thunderbolt compatible cables.

X (formerly known as Twitter) user Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) has shared images of the USB Type-C cable that will allegedly ship with the iPhone 15, claiming that the accessory is 1.6m long and has 16 pins. It is said to be more durable and thicker than the existing USB Type-C to Lightning charging cable Apple offers.

According to the whistleblower, the data cable that comes with the iPhone 15 will provide a USB 2.0 connection and support 20V, 3A charging. If the leaked details about the cable are accurate, the included accessory will allow data transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps.

Recently, the same X user leaked details of an alleged iPhone 15 cable, which is 1.5m long, has a braided design, and is colored to match the iPhone in the box. However, the source mentioned that they were unable to verify the origin of these images, so it is worth taking these claims with a grain of salt.

It was reported last week that the iPhone 15 series will support Thunderbolt/USB 4 connections, offering faster data transfer speeds. Retimer chips are typically found in high-speed data-transfer devices that support Thunderbolt and USB 4 high-speed transfers, suggesting that the upcoming phone could offer data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps.

Another report suggests that some iPhone 15 models will support 35W wired charging via a new USB Type-C port. Users may recall that the iPhone 14 Pro currently supports 27W charging, which is by far the fastest charging speed on an iPhone. The Cupertino company could use a 35W adapter with dual USB ports or a 30W MacBook Air adapter for the iPhone 15 series smartphones expected to launch in September.
