iPhone 16 Pro Models to Feature Stacked Rear Camera Sensor Design: Ming-Chi Kuo

The iPhone 15 series is yet to launch, but we’ve heard multiple rumors about its successor, the iPhone 16 series. Next year’s high-end models are reportedly expected to feature new rear camera sensors. A well-known market analyst said that Apple may install a new type of sensor in the camera unit of the iPhone 16 Pro models. These sensors will allow the phone to capture better images in low-light conditions. Meanwhile, the regular iPhone 15‌ and ‌‌iPhone 15‌‌ Plus are also expected to feature new image sensors.

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo blog post Apple will use a stacked CIS design in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, a feature that will enhance the phone’s camera capabilities, it claimed on Friday. This year’s standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also said to feature a stacked complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor for their 48-megapixel rear cameras. Chinese manufacturer Will Semiconductor is said to benefit from camera upgrades for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series due to tight production capacity of Sony’s high-end CIS.

According to reports, due to Sony’s supply problems, Apple has shelved plans to use the stack design CIS on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. The analyst predicts that Sony’s production capacity will remain tight until 2025, and these production shortfalls could benefit rival CIS supplier Will Semi. Guo Mingchi said that Will Semi’s high-end CIS shipments will increase by about 50% month-on-month, reaching 36 million pieces in the second half of 2024.

In addition to Sony’s new stacked camera sensor technology, the iPhone 16 series is also rumored to feature new battery technology. The technology promises to extend battery life compared to standard batteries. Apple may introduce 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe wireless charging in next year’s iPhones. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also expected to feature an ultra-telephoto periscope zoom camera with a focal length exceeding 300mm.

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series of smartphones on Wednesday, September 13, which could include the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Pre-orders for the new series will likely begin September 15.

It is said that all models of the iPhone 15 series this year will be equipped with dynamic islands. The regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could run on the A16 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 15 Pro models may feature the A17 Bionic SoC.
