According to Human Rights Watch, Israel’s use of white phosphorus in attacks in Gaza and Lebanon violated international humanitarian law’s requirement to “take all feasible precautions to avoid civilian casualties.”
The rights group confirmed Israel’s deployment on October 10 and 11 of the chemical, which has “significant incendiary effects and can severely burn people and set nearby buildings, fields and other civilian objects on fire” .
“The use of white phosphorus in Gaza, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, exacerbates the risks to civilians and violates international humanitarian law prohibiting placing civilians at unnecessary risk,” Human Rights Watch said.
International humanitarian law is a set of rules based on the Geneva Conventions designed to protect civilians during armed conflict.
