U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez on Monday ignored calls for him to step down after the New Jersey Democrat and his wife were indicted last week on federal bribery charges.

“I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I will still be New Jersey’s senior senator,” Menendez said as a growing number of lawmakers called for his resignation.

Prosecutors said they found $480,000 in cash at Menendez’s home during a raid. But Menendez claimed on Monday that the cash, which had been withdrawn from his personal savings account for more than 30 years, was for an “emergency.”
