Meta to Launch AI-Powered Chatbots With Different Personalities by September: Report

Meta Platforms is preparing to launch a series of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots that exhibit different personalities as early as September, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Meta has been prototyping chatbots to have human-like discussions with users as the company attempts to increase engagement on its social media platforms, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Menlo Park, California-based social media giant is even exploring a chatbot that speaks like Abraham Lincoln and another that offers advice on travel options like a surfer, the report adds. The purpose of these chatbots is to provide new search capabilities and provide suggestions.

The report comes as Meta executives work to improve retention for its new text-based app, Threads, which lost more than half its users in the weeks after its July 5 launch.

Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

Facebook’s parent company reported strong growth in advertising revenue last week and expects third-quarter revenue to be higher than market expectations.

The company has recovered from dismal results in 2022, buoyed by hype about emerging artificial intelligence technology and austerity measures. The company has laid off about 21,000 employees since last fall.

Bloomberg News reported in July that Apple was developing artificial intelligence products similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, adding that it had built its own framework, called “Ajax,” to create large language models, And it’s also testing what some engineers call chatbots. “Apple GPT”.
