Nearly half of CEOs believe that AI should replace the top job

Since the explosive launch of ChatGPT, workers have been generally concerned that employers will use artificial intelligence to replace human work to reduce costs. However, new research reveals an interesting twist: CEOs are considering replacing their roles with artificial intelligence.

Researchers at edX, an education platform for upskilling employees, conducted a survey involving more than 1,500 senior executives and knowledge workers. The survey results show that nearly half of CEOs believe that artificial intelligence has the potential to replace “most” or even all aspects of their job.

What’s even more interesting is that 47% of the executives surveyed not only see the possibility of artificial intelligence replacing their role, but also view it as a desirable development.

Why? Because they anticipate artificial intelligence may reignite demand for traditional leadership among those who remain.

“Success in the CEO role depends on effective leadership, and AI can free up time for this critical aspect of their role,” Andy Morgan, edX Business Director, commented on the survey results.

“Executives understand that time saved on routine tasks can spur innovation, foster creativity, and enhance the fundamental skills of their teams, thereby promoting individual and organizational success,” he added.

Faced with tight schedules and pressure to run their companies as leanly as possible, Morgan suspects CEOs have delegated day-to-day tasks to companies like Bard, ChatGPT and Bing to free up more time for top-level decisions.

“The CEO isn’t going anywhere,” he told us wealth. “We will continue to see the relevance and necessity of human skills in the workplace – critical thinking, creativity and leadership – which are fundamental to the CEO role and which AI simply cannot replace.”

While AI won’t replace senior executives anytime soon, Morgan warned that CEOs who use AI will eventually replace those who don’t.

But CEOs already know this: Research from EdX shows that 79% of C-suite executives worry that they won’t be prepared for the future of work if they don’t learn how to use artificial intelligence.

“For C-suite executives, including future and current CEOs, understanding and leveraging artificial intelligence will be critical to future success,” Morgan insisted. “This is not humans versus artificial intelligence, but how do we Integrate these developments into the workplace to ensure long-term relevance.”

Working with artificial intelligence, not against it

Morgan isn’t the first expert to advise leaders to work with, rather than against, new technology.
