HMD Global has been releasing Nokia-branded smartphones for the past seven years. The Finnish company revealed new plans to launch its own range of smartphones on Tuesday (September 12). HMD Global is looking to expand its product portfolio with the new HMD brand, which will co-exist with Nokia phones. Launched in 2017, the Nokia 6 is the first Nokia-branded Android smartphone from HMD Global. It was initially launched in China and sold exclusively there for a few months before becoming available in other markets. The latest phone launched by HMD Global in India is the Nokia G42 5G.
Jean-Francois Baril, CEO, HMD Global Announce Linkedin stated that the company will expand its product portfolio with a new HMD brand. He said the company will launch a new portfolio of HMD-branded mobile devices, as well as Nokia devices and collaborations with new partners. “As ‘HMD – the home of Nokia phones’ we have been in a unique position over the past six years and it has been a great journey,” Baril said. He said HMD Global was the “fastest growing 5G company year-on-year smartphone maker” and a leader in sustainability for repairable Nokia devices.
“Now we are ready to take the next step – to enter the market independently and become a force in the new world of telecommunications focused on consumer needs.” The LinkedIn post did not delve into details about the new HMD products and their potential launch dates. .
HMD Global launched its first mobile phone – Nokia 6 in 2017. This was followed by the launch of Nokia 8, Nokia 2 and a number of Nokia-branded mobile phones. Recently, the company launched the Nokia G42 5G in India priced at Rs. 12,599 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant alone. It’s available in So Gray and So Purple colors and will be available via Amazon starting September 15th.
The Nokia G42 5G features a 6.56-inch HD+ (720 x 1,612 pixels) LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ SoC, paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. It has a triple rear camera unit guided by a 50-megapixel primary sensor. It comes with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 20W wired fast charging.
