Obituary: John Gordon, former art student who designed Green Bay Packers’ ‘G’ logo for Vince Lombardi

Artist John Gordon, who as a young art student helped design the Green Bay Packers’ distinctive “G” logo, has died at age 83.

Gordon died Saturday, said Matt Cotter, owner of Cotter Funeral and Cremation Care in De Pere, Wisconsin.The funeral home posted a obituary It said Gordon “passed away surrounded by his family after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.”

In 1961, Gordon was an art student at St. Norbert College and working as an assistant to Packers equipment manager Gerald “Papa” Breschel when he had the opportunity to coach Vince The team’s logo was designed under the leadership of Vince Lombardi. WLUK TV the report said.

Packers curator Brent Hensel said Gordon’s name and his sketch are on display at the Packers Hall of Fame Museum at Lambeau Field.

The original “G” designed by Gordon was shaped like a football, but over the years it has been modified to the current oval “G”.

Although it is commonly believed that the “G” stands for greatness, Packers historian Cliff Christl writes in his book that it actually stands for Green Bay. A 2015 article on the Packers website.

A lifelong artist, Gordon taught art at Parkview High School in Ashwaubenon and later became an adjunct professor of art at his alma mater, St. Norbert College.

His survivors include his wife, Dianne, and his ex-wife, Joan Gordon, as well as their six children, three grandchildren, one sibling and three stepchildren.

Gordon’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Green Bay.
