Optimism network launches testnet fault-proof system in pursuit of decentralization

According to an October 3 blog post, OP Labs, the developer of Optimism Network, has launched a testnet version of its error-proofing system. The post states that once testing is completed, it will allow for “a more decentralized and efficient superchain.” The new system is currently deployed in the Optimism Goerli network.

Currently, the OP Stack-based network uses a centralized orderer to bundle transactions and submit them to Ethereum. If the sequencer submits incorrect data, the user cannot submit a fraud proof to stop the sequencer, and if an attacker can control it, there is the possibility of validating fraudulent transactions. L2Beat has warn This risk was mentioned in the Optimism report, stating that “users need to trust block proposers to submit the correct L1 state root.”

OP Stack-based networks like Optimism and Base aim to be Optimistic Aggregations – a type of Layer 2 that relies on the security of Ethereum. In a January 2021 article, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin offered an optimistic summary must Allow users to submit fraud proofs to block fraudulent withdrawals to Ethereum. Otherwise, they are not truly decentralized.

November 2022, Buterin claim Some aggregators may have “training wheels” that allow them to remain centralized temporarily while working on fraud prevention systems, but think they should strive to be decentralized.

OP Labs claims that the new error-proofing system will help achieve the goal of decentralizing the OP Stack network: “The system is designed to ultimately enable secure bridging without the need for a central backup.”

Additionally, it claims that the new system is modular, allowing each network to develop its own system to prevent fraud. It consists of three independent components: the error-proofing program (FPP), the error-proofing virtual machine (FPVM), and the “controversial game protocol”. Since these three components can be implemented independently, it provides the possibility to “customize the construction of error-proofing systems” for each network.

The post states that this will create more diversity for the Optimism superchain, ultimately making the entire ecosystem more secure. The team says the network could even decide to use zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) as a way to prevent fraud. ZK proofs are often used for zero-knowledge aggregation, but not for optimistic aggregation.

OP Labs has been trying to build a blockchain network interconnection network called “Super Chain”. To achieve this goal, it created OP Stack, a set of software tools that can be used to create custom blockchain networks.Available networks are Created The “OpEVM” software aims to achieve the same goal while using Avail as the base layer instead of Ethereum. Polygon’s ZK Supernets and zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine Hyperchain are other examples of Superchain competitors.
