PS Plus 12-Month Subscriptions Getting a Price Hike, Monthly Free Games for September Announced: Details

PlayStation Plus is about to increase in price. Sony has confirmed plans to increase the price of PS Plus annual subscriptions for all three tiers starting September 6. The news is tucked away beneath their monthly blog post, which lists new free games coming to the service. With the D-Day approaching, the base PS Plus Essential plan will cost $79.99 (~Rs 6,611) for a 12-month subscription, up from the current price of $60 (~Rs 4,959). However, the price in India should be much lower due to regional pricing – currently, the PS Plus Essential annual plan costs Rs. 2,999 nationwide. The price increase is not yet in Indian rupees, so for a better estimate I think it’s best to compare it to the Japanese cost, which will soon rise to 6,800 yen (roughly Rs. 3,850).

“This price adjustment will allow us to continue to bring high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service,” blog post wrote, adding that the 12-month subscription price will remain discounted over the course of a year compared to buying one-month and three-month plans. It’s unclear if Sony plans to increase the price of its short-term memberships, though fans aren’t happy with the hike, with some expressing their disappointment cancel their current subscription.

Anyway, here are the new prices for PS Plus annual memberships (as mentioned, take note of the Japanese price tag to get a rough estimate of the Indian price):

PS Plus Essential 12-month subscription

$79.99 / €71,99 / £59.99 / JPY 6,800 (~Rs 3,850)

PS Plus Additional 12 Months Subscription

$134.99 / €125,99 / £99.99 / JPY 11,700 (~Rs 6,620)

PS Plus Premium/Deluxe 12-month subscription

$159.99 / €151,99 / £119.99 / JPY 13,900 (~Rs 7,850)

For users already subscribed to a 12-month plan, the price change will not take effect until the next renewal date, which is on or after November 6th. That said, any modifications to existing memberships made on or after November 6th September 6th (such as upgrading, downgrading, or purchasing additional time) will be reflected to show the new price. Just months after Microsoft raised the price of a monthly Xbox Game Pass subscription, the price of the PlayStation has followed suit. Of course, the two companies offer mostly the same benefits when it comes to free games and online multiplayer, but Xbox has a slight advantage by offering its first-party exclusives on the service on day one.

PS Plus September 2023 games

At the same time, Sony didn’t make a good enough case for its price increase. While the higher tiers of PS Plus subscriptions do allow you to try out new games for an hour or two, in recent months it’s offered very few free games every month. Starting September 5th, all PS Plus members will be able to download the new Saints Row game for free – a soft reboot of the Deep Silver street crime series set in the fictional San Eliso Badlands, full of Funky characters, neon-shrouded scenes, and tons of explosions. It didn’t get much popularity when it launched, as it was uninspired and full of game-breaking glitches, so you can already imagine why members weren’t too keen on it.

Other entries this month include the sandbox MMO Black Desert and Generation Zero, in which you battle deadly machines in a hostile 1980s open-world playground. The three free games will be available for download until October 2, after which you’ll need to keep your PS Plus subscription to keep accessing them.

PlayStation Plus subscriptions in India start at Rs. Essential at Rs 499 per month, Extra plan at Rs 749 per month, and top deluxe membership at $849 per month. All three tiers include monthly free games.
