Sony will launch a cloud streaming service for the PS5 console later this month. The feature will be available only to PS Plus Premium members (the highest tier), allowing them to stream select catalog games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon: Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima and more without having to download or actually own them. Unfortunately, its launch is staggered, launching first in Japan, Europe, and North America, with the promise of “hundreds” of PS5 games to come. The company confirmed in June that it was adding and testing cloud streaming as part of its shift to the technology, which it further solidified with its PlayStation Portal handheld device.
PS5 cloud streaming is expected to launch in Japan on October 17, followed by Europe on October 23, and North America on October 30. In addition, players can stream any digital game they own (no download required), such as the new God of War Ragnarök, Resident to name a few, Evil Dead 4, and Dead Island 2, including any other DLC. As for quality, it looks like the August report was correct, with PlayStation offering four high-quality resolutions to choose from – 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K, all with 60fps and SDR or HDR output. While players can certainly choose their preferred resolution, the results will ultimately depend on the type of network connection they have. Sony recommends at least 15mbps for 1080p streaming and 38mbps for 4K streaming.
Technically, the updated PS Plus offered cloud streaming when it launched last year, but it was limited to PS4 and a classic catalog of PS2 and PS3 games. In addition to taking screenshots, players can also record up to three minutes of gameplay footage, which will be downloaded locally to the PS5’s media library and can also be accessed through the PlayStation mobile app.It is also worth noting that Sony’s word choice, which states that said feature will be available “exclusively” on PS5 “at launch,” suggesting we may be able to stream games to other devices in the future. All of this will be packaged with the existing benefits of a PS Plus Premium subscription, which include game trials (timed demos) of new games, a variety of free games every month, exclusive discounts, and access to online multiplayer and cloud storage permissions.
In August, Sony raised the price of 12-month PS Plus plans, although it didn’t make a strong case for the membership due to the lackluster performance of free games recently. The price increase has led to a group of fans expressing their frustration by canceling their subscriptions, so hopefully the addition of PS5 cloud streaming will be a boon for PlayStation. In fact, Sony claims that the feature is already available in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway , Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States. As mentioned, India is not on that list, nor in Sony’s upcoming installment plans.
PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription in India starts at Rs. 849 per month.
