Sam Bankman-Fried requests weekday freedom for legal defense work

Days after a federal judge revoked bail for FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, he is now seeking permission to spend five working days outside the detention center working with his legal team on his defense case.

Legal representatives for SBF sent a letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan on Friday, saying their client was having difficulty thoroughly reviewing the massive accumulation of documents related to the case at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, Bloomberg reported.

SBF lawyer Christian Everdell said:

“Just last week, the government produced three-quarters of the Slack newsletter that should have been produced months ago, but Mr. Bankman-Fried will have no hope of reviewing it against this timetable.”

Everdell said giving SBF easy access to his legal team and allowing him to use an Internet-enabled laptop inside the courthouse would expedite the proceedings. The lawyer emphasized the importance of the arrangement, as his fraud trial is scheduled to begin in October.

SBF maintains its innocence but faces charges of orchestrating an elaborate fraudulent scheme that involved the unauthorized acquisition of billions of dollars from FTX client funds for personal use.

Prosecutors reportedly argued that unless Bankman-Fried provided timely information about the advice he received and where it came from, he should not have made that defense during the trial.

Prosecutors reportedly mentioned their ability to provide information on the hard drive to Bankman-Fried.

However, due to limitations, not all information can be stored on a laptop or drive. Prison authorities have denied plans to divert SBF to allow him access to a laptop, and he is still awaiting a judge’s decision on his latest plea.
