The new waterdrop hinge design offers benefits such as extended lifespan and reduced center crease, and is becoming increasingly popular among smartphone manufacturers looking to launch the next generation of foldable smartphones. Recently, Samsung also joined several Chinese brands in launching a new line of foldable products this year, launching the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. In fact, each manufacturer uses different components to achieve the same Effect. Now it looks like Samsung is preparing to apply the same design principles to its Galaxy Book series.
According to Korean media reports electricity companySamsung is considering bringing the waterdrop hinge design of its new foldable devices to a larger device. Sources say the foldable laptop could be launched as soon as next year. For this particular foldable laptop, the waterdrop hinge will replace the regular hinges seen on regular laptops from the company and other manufacturers. The waterdrop hinge design perfectly fits the design of the foldable display and also makes the entire device lighter. However, the benefits only stop there, as the waterdrop hinge also reportedly makes the laptop thicker compared to a regular hinge.
According to the same source, LG and HP are also looking to make their U-shaped hinges lighter than those used on existing foldable laptop models. Samsung reportedly wanted to launch a foldable laptop last year, but delayed the decision “due to low consumer demand.” The electronics giant is also considering selecting Samsung Display or BOE to support OLED panels for its foldable laptops. Currently, the brand plans to bring this larger foldable form factor to market in the second half of next year.
Before launching the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung had been using its older V-shaped hinge design, which resulted in a deeper, more pronounced crease in the center of its folding displays. Samsung’s new waterdrop hinge design keeps the phone’s main display in a more secure U-shaped (rather than the earlier V-shaped) position. It also makes the phone more durable when it withstands drops, which could otherwise easily damage the internal gears, preventing the main display from fully opening.
Before Samsung, waterdrop hinges had been used on multiple foldable devices by various manufacturers. These include Oppo Find N2, Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold 2, and more. However, Samsung is the only manufacturer to offer an IPX8 rating for its foldable devices, which is currently the highest water resistance rating in its class.
