Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones at its Galaxy Unpacked event last week, along with the Galaxy S9 series of tablets and the Galaxy Watch 6 series of smartwatches. This year’s Galaxy Z series of foldable phones brings several improvements over the previous generation, but lacks some durability claims. Like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, the new model also lacks dust resistance and retains the IPX8 build. Now, Samsung executives are reportedly saying that the company is working on enhancing the dust resistance of its foldable smartphones.
according to a Report South Korean publication BizWatch reported that Samsung Electronics Vice President Mijung Noh confirmed at a press conference that the company is working to enhance the dust-proof performance of its foldable products. The report quoted Noh as saying, “We are well aware of consumer demand for dust protection, and we are making various efforts to achieve this goal, but due to the nature of foldable devices, there are many moving parts, so dust protection is difficult ” (translated from Korean). He reportedly added that consumers will have to “wait for a while” to get dust-resistant features on foldable phones.
A dustproof foldable phone would definitely give Samsung an upper hand over its competitors. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Samsung’s latest generation of foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, all have an IPX8 rating. This year’s model was rumored to have an official IP58 dust and water resistance rating, but that didn’t materialize.
Motorola Edge 40 and Asus Zenfone 10 come with IP68 dust and water resistance. Pixel Fold, on the other hand, has received IPX8 waterproof certification. iPhone 14 series models have an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating. Meanwhile, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and Motorola Razr 40 come with IP52 waterproof rating.
Galaxy Z Fold 5 price starts at Rs. The 256GB storage version has been sold in India at 1,54,999. Galaxy Z Flip 5 is priced at Rs. 99,999 for the 256GB storage model. Both models will be launched in China on August 11.
