SAP’s India Arm Eyes More Patents, Jobs Amid AI Push

SAP SE’s Indian unit wants to double the German software giant’s patent share and invest more in artificial intelligence to add 3,000 jobs a year, an executive told Reuters on Thursday.

In an interview on the sidelines of an event in Bengaluru, Sindhu Gangadharan, managing director of SAP India Labs, said she hopes the Indian unit can expand its share of global SAP patents to 50% from the current 25%.

Gangadharan said the company hopes to double its artificial intelligence talent base by 2024 and expects “3,000 new employees to join the organization every year” to quell concerns that the rise of emerging technologies could hurt job growth.

With more than 15,000 employees, SAP India Labs aims to embed generative artificial intelligence into its products to better meet the evolving needs of customers ranging from Thermax to Dabur India.

“Through artificial intelligence, India can consolidate its IT supremacy,” Gangadaran said at an event earlier in the day.

The comments come as SAP seeks to “double down” its investments in India, its fastest-growing region and home to 40% of its global research and development (R&D) activity.

Following the runaway success of Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot ChatGPT, companies around the world, from banks to big tech companies, are increasing their investments in artificial intelligence.

Referring to the regulation of AI, Gangadharan said there should be “substantial liability hurdles and flexibility for end users.”

Her comments follow a call in June by ChatGPT founder Sam Altman for self-regulation, as governments around the world race to regulate the use of artificial intelligence tools.
