Specialty vehicle manufacturer Oshkosh electrifies firetrucks

Large vehicles are considered among the most difficult to electrify. But Pierce, the largest fire truck manufacturer in North America, is trying it.

Pierce has delivered Volterra electric fire trucks to numerous fire departments across the country, with more on the way.

It’s part of Pierce’s parent’s larger electrification plan, Oshkosh Corporation. The Wisconsin-based company is a specialty vehicle superstore. Need a press truck? Mail truck? rubbish truck? Construction lifts? Oshkosh manufactures all of these products, as well as airport emergency vehicles, trailers, concrete mixers, truck-mounted cranes, military vehicles and more.

Oshkosh utilizes technology that can be applied to a variety of products to suit different markets. Electrification and automation are just two examples.

The company makes an electric fire truck called the Volterra and is electrifying other vehicles for other departments. For example, Oshkosh won a contract to build battery-electric and internal combustion mail delivery vehicles for the U.S. Postal Service. The contract allows for the delivery of 50,000 and 165,000 vehicles over 10 years, respectively. Postal trucks designed so internal combustion versions can be retrofitted with battery-electric technology.
