Spider-Man 2 just released a new gameplay trailer at the PlayStation State of Play event on Thursday night, which revealed new details about its exploration, side missions, and new technology. Game director Bryan Intihar first compared its open-world experience to the 2018 prequel, noting that the map has nearly doubled in size and expanded beyond the East River to include Queens and Brooklyn. To compensate for the distance, Spider-Man – Peter Parker and Miles Morales – are equipped with deployable web wings that allow them to quickly glide across the city. In fact, these can be used with net swings to increase momentum by alternating between the two.
As previously reported, players can instantly and seamlessly switch between Spider-Man games (a feature enabled by the PS5’s SSD), no matter how far away they are in the open world. This loading speed also extends to the fast travel system, with new areas unlocked based on how many side activities you complete in that area. In Spider-Man 2, our hero’s mask is equipped with new AR technology that reveals world activity through holographic icons in your field of vision. Any nearby quests and NPC requests can be tracked using the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man app that pops up in the lower right corner of the screen. While most missions can be completed by Spider-Man (indicated by the little face icon on your phone’s screen), some missions are reserved for “certain heroes.”
For example, Miles might be asked to appear at Brooklyn Vision Academy, his current place of study, which seems like something worth exploring to some extent. Likewise, Midtown High’s football field, where we saw Peter and Harry Osborn hanging out in an old trailer, will also be available to explore – at least to some extent. Intiha explained that side missions will be presented primarily through “visual clues,” such as Talon drones in the sky guiding Kraven the Hunter’s story, and floating green symbols pointing to Mysterio’s presence. This interaction will ultimately lead to a climactic showdown with Spider-Man’s villains, not just the massive Venom.
In addition to unlocking new spider suits, exploration rewards you with new combat and gadget upgrades. Intihar claims that the sequel will feature more than 65 suits from comic books, movies, and some original designs.
