Spotify has begun testing an artificial intelligence-powered tool that will allow podcast creators to translate their episodes into different languages. The audio streaming platform uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to allow podcast hosts to automatically provide versions of their shows in other languages while retaining their voices in all translated versions. The company says it’s using the speech generation technology recently launched by ChatGPT creator OpenAI to deliver new translation features that it says preserve the style of the original speaker.
Streaming Platform declare The episode, which was voice-translated in English by the podcast creator on Monday, is part of a beta program that will be available in French, German and Spanish in the coming weeks. The episodes will be available to free and premium users in all countries where Spotify is supported.
Spotify claims the tool uses OpenAI’s speech generation technology to match the speaking style of podcast hosts. According to the streaming service, unlike dubbed podcast episodes, the voice translation feature will provide a more personal and authentic experience as it will allow regional listeners to listen to episodes in the host’s voice.
The new voice translation tool is already being tested by podcast hosts Bill Simmons, Dax Shepard, Lex Fridman, Monica Padman and Steven Bartlett, and the platform will soon make some existing episodes available in French, German and Spanish.
Future episodes released by these podcasts will also be automatically translated, according to the platform. Spotify also said that Trevor Noah’s upcoming original podcast is expected to be powered by automatic translation tools when it launches later this year.
