Detroit- star The company is resurrecting the all-electric Fiat 500e for the U.S. market as the automaker begins rolling out electric vehicles domestically to meet increasingly stringent fuel economy regulations.

Stellantis said on Tuesday that the small city car is expected to first go on sale early next year as a special edition “(500e)RED” model with a starting price of $34,095. It’s unclear whether the vehicle qualifies for any federal electric vehicle subsidies or tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act other than leasing.

The 500e will be Stellantis’ first all-electric vehicle launched in the U.S. since its founding in 2021. The automaker, formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA Group, currently offers a variety of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and plans to launch several additional all-electric models in the coming years.

Weighing just over 3,000 pounds, the 500e is expected to be the lightest all-electric vehicle in the segment, Stellantis said. However, it’s also expected to have lower range and lower power than many other electric vehicles currently on sale.

The car will be imported from Italy and will have 162 foot-pounds of torque, an estimated range of 149 miles and a 0-60 mph time of 8.5 seconds. That performance is better than some electric cars, but still well below the cheaper Chevy Bolt, for example, which can travel 259 miles on a charge and has 266 foot-pounds of torque.

The electric Fiat 500e, as well as gasoline-powered models, were previously produced at a Fiat Chrysler plant in Mexico. Before the car was discontinued in 2019, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne infamously told customers not to buy a 500e because “every time I sold one, it cost me $14,000 ”.

The RED model is a partnership between Stellantis Corporation (RED), a charity co-founded by U2 frontman Bono in 2006 to fight AIDS, and the ONE Campaign, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating poverty and preventable disease. cooperate.

A Fiat spokesman said more 500e models will be sold in Fiat dealerships in the future.
