Taylor Swift rumors cause spike in NFL ticket prices

Taylor Swift might be the best thing to happen to ticket sellers (and scalpers) in a long time.

Ticket prices for this week’s New York Jets game increased by more than 40% amid rumors that Swift might attend. The Jets will take on the Kansas City Chiefs, whose tight end Travis Kelce is rumored to be dating the pop star (neither party has confirmed this).

Of course, the Jets are having a terrible season. Their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is out for the season after playing just a handful of games in the first game. The team is at the bottom of the AFC East with a record of 1 win and 2 losses. Normally, this would make it easy to get tickets.

But with Time’s tour on hiatus and fascination with Swift’s life at an all-time high, fans seemed just as excited to catch a glimpse of her in action. A TickPick spokesperson said that once rumors spread that Swift would be participating, the “entry” price for the game jumped from $83 to $119. As of this morning, tickets have dropped to $110, while the average ticket price is $237.

TickPick says sales have doubled since the rumor leaked.

Meanwhile, StubHub has seen a surge in interest, with nearly 1,400 people an hour looking for game tickets as of Friday morning.

Swift’s appearance at a Chiefs game last week and rumors of a romance with Kelce were a boon to the NFL (and other businesses). Since Kelce started playing, her jersey sales have jumped nearly 400%. Swifties are brushing up on the rules of the sport. Even Heinz got in on the craze, rebranding its ketchup/ranch hybrid product as “ketchup and ranch-looking” after photos of Swift’s chicken finger snacks surfaced online.
